ESSENTIAL OILS

Disclaimer - Please note I am not a qualified aromatherapist I have simply used essential oils for my own well-being for many years if you have any questions then please consult a practitioner directly this information is for guidance only.

Aromatherapy is ideal for self-help as it is effective and enjoyable to use. Bathing, receiving, giving massage or simply inhaling essential oils can help us to create balance, boost the immune system, reduce stress and improve health and well-being. If used correctly essential oils have no adverse side effects.

A bit of background..

Aromatic herbs have been used since antiquity to cleanse and heal both body and mind. Records indicate use of aromatic waters as far back as 5,000 years. In ancient Egypt aromatic waters and resins were used for ceremonies and rituals, whilst cedarwood and frankincense were used in the embalming process due to their preserving properties. Also, Ayurvedic medical texts from early Indian society include aromatic essences in many of their treatments. Greeks and Romans too used aromatics in their ceremonies.

An indication of the antiseptic properties of what we now know as essential oils as we know them today began in the Middle Ages due to the seeming immunity of the perfumers to the plagues and cholera that swept Europe, by the C17th oils had become widely used in medicine. Towards the end of the C19th scientific experiments into the anti-bacterial properties of plants began to clarify the chemical composition and potential healing powers of the essential oil molecules. The French chemist Rene-Maurice Gattefosse first gave the name 'aromatherapie' to this branch of herbal medicine. Another Frenchman Dr. Jean Valnet, used essential oils in the Second World War to help heal soldiers wounds. His extensive coverage of the subject gained official recognition for the therapy in France and even today many doctors prescribe oils for use both internally and externally.

In the UK we owe much to the development of aromatherapy to French biochemist Marguerite Maury as she introduced the use of essential oils to the beauty therapy industry due to their preservative qualities.

Increasingly aromatherapy is being welcomed in to orthodox medical practise and everyday life, each supermarket, health food store, seemingly shop seems to stock their own variety of products that contain some form of essential oil. PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHEN PURCHASING ESSENTIAL OILS AND ONLY USE THOSE THAT ARE CERTIFIED, SHOW THE LATIN NAME AND FROM A REPUTABLE DEALER. I personally buy my oils from Anne Northern at PA Aromatheraphy (CLICK ON PHOTO FOR LINK) and have done for years as she is reliable, very knowledgeable and sells a great product.
